Hi, I am Firas M Aljanadi, resident in the fourth year of cardiac surgery in Damascus University. Our program includes six years in cardiac surgery after medicine school to get the master degree in cardiac surgeryand become elgeible to work. Two years in rotations and four years in cardiac surgery, adult and congenital. In this year i do in the OR as first assistant(able to harvest the saphenous vein (classicaly or endoscopically),harvest the ITA ,do median sternotomy or lateral thoractomy, cannulation (standard or femoral)and beginning the pump, decannulation, hemostasis, and fixing simple congenital defects)in addition to the ICU calls and patients prepare. Iwould appreciate if anyone could tell me about Cardiac surgery fellowship in the USA after finishing my program. What is my chance?About the required exams to pass?About general surgery if required or not? What are other required conditions? How many years? Is it practical or i'll be as an observer? From where can i begin? I'd really appreciate any information regarding this issue . Kind regards, firas

One think you have to decide is if you 1) want to do your entire fellowship in the USA and being able to take the boards in CT surgery or 2)you just want to do 1-2 years additional CT surgery training. In the first option you need to complete general surgery training (5 years) plus 2-3 years of CT surgery training in the US. In the second option your best choice is to apply for a non-accredited CT surgery fellowship. There are many non-accredited fellowships advertised at CTSNET. Cleveleand Clinic, Mayo Clinic and others are some of those fellowships. The only caveat is that you don't get to do much on these institutions, mainly you open, cannulate and close and occasionaly you get to put a few sutures in. In order to apply you need to take USMLE steps 1 and 2 and to be eligible for a J1 visa. You better start early because the process is time consuming. I hope that helps.
